Academic Programs at Hellenic College

Hellenic College boasts the only accredited undergraduate department in the western hemisphere that offers a comprehensive curriculum in religious studies from an Orthodox Christian perspective. Students of the Religious Studies Program enjoy a unique opportunity to explore the intellectual richness of their faith in an academic setting that is integrated with a liturgical and campus life shaped by their Orthodox Christian tradition. The program, which offers an integrated course of study leading to B.A. in Classics, is quite unique. Like most programs at other institutions the Classics at Hellenic College offers students the opportunity to study the rich legacy of ancient Greece and Rome and can lead to graduate studies in a wide variety of fields, such as Comparative Literature, Linguistics, History and Archeology, Philosophy and Politics. Its uniqueness, however, is to be found in its course offerings that may also include Byzantine and Modern Greek language and literature. Thus the students are afforded the opportunity to explore and appreciate the continuity of an ancient culture that has survived through Byzantium to the present. Moreover, our students could receive a full scholarship to study for a semester or a year at a university in Greece and their degrees are recognized by the Greek state.

The Elementary Education program offers a four-year integrated course of study that leads to a Bachelor of Arts with a concentration in Elementary Education. It is intended for students who are interested in obtaining licensure as an elementary school teacher (grades 1-6). Its primary goal is to provide scholarly concentration in curriculum theory, development, and instruction.

The Human Development Program integrates biological, psychological, socio-cultural, and religious perspectives to understand personality development that addresses the complexity of human nature. Faculty prepare students with the foundation to serve in multiple human service professions from a broadly based systems perspective. Hellenic College offers a baccalaureate degree in Liberal Studies with a concentration in Literature and History. The program provides the opportunity to integrate literary and historical studies in a sustained and systematic way. Students interested in the areas of intersection and cross-fertilization between these two fields start with core courses and then choose from a variety of electives. While the core courses offer a broad-based background for studying literature and history in tandem, the electives cover the works of particular writers and the context of the historical period in which their works were written.
